Bakery Launched By South Valley Businesssource Center Finds Success In The Midst Of A Pandemic

Alina Cardenas, owner of Proust Bakery, knew she loved to cook at a very young age. Once she had the opportunity, she worked in the food industry where she launched a career in catering and developed her skills in the kitchen.

She then went on to work in restaurants as a pastry cook for top chefs in Los Angeles, later making a transition into pastry production.

As she gained more experience and became more creative with her recipes, a desire to start her own bakery grew. That is when she decided to visit the South Valley BusinessSource Center and paired up with Business Coach Luis Luna to launch her new business in April 2020.

“I went to the South Valley BusinessSource before I knew all the steps I needed to take to start my own business. I was completely overwhelmed! I met Luis there and he guided me through all the necessary paperwork and showed me what licenses I needed for what I said I wanted to do. I had a lot of questions and a lot to learn in general. Without him, I surely wouldn’t be where I am today. I couldn’t have hoped for a better place to go for everything I needed.”

Alina first came to the South Valley BusinessSource Center in October of 2019 and participated in our How to Start a Business Workshop. Luis Luna was able to help Alina obtain the necessary license and permits needed for her bakery, including a seller’s permit, a business license and a DBA. The South Valley BusinessSource Center provided Alina with all the necessary resources for her to begin operating her business including financial guidance.

“I would absolutely recommend BusinessSource to other businesses. Whether you are wondering where to start, or if you have already been established, I think everyone could benefit from this wonderful community resource.”

Today, we congratulate Alina for her recent account with a restaurant that is using her bread for their menu dishes. She plans to expand her capacity to do more wholesale accounts, eventually doing both wholesale and retail at equal volume.

In order to adapt to the pandemic, Alina wears a mask every time she’s in the kitchen or working with her product. She makes sure her hands are clean at all times and gets tested regularly for COVID-19.
