From DBA to BTRC: How ICON CDC Supported K & A Party Rentals' Business Journey

Pedro Pina, an aspiring entrepreneur, envisioned K&A Party Rentals as a Latino-owned business rooted in Pacoima, providing top-notch party rental services for corporate/private events, and special celebrations across the greater Los Angeles area. Committed to excellence, trust, and community spirit, Pedro aims to create job opportunities and empower the underserved population as his business begins to grow.

On July 1, 2024, Pedro met with a Business Source Specialist Christian at ICON CDC’s North Valley BusinessSource Center. Referred by Proyecto del Barrio, Pedro sought services to help him navigate the business startup process. He faced several challenges, including the need for technical assistance in publishing his DBA (Doing Business As) and obtaining a city business license (BTRC - Business Tax Registration Certificate). 

Pedro had already applied for his business DBA online and received the statement via email. Once he received the DBA Statement, Pedro realized he was not familiar with the next steps and seeked professional assistance The BSC Specialist Christian guided Pedro through the process of publishing the DBA in a local newspaper, and has successfully established his DBA as K&A Party Rentals within the Los Angeles County Clerk Office. 

Additionally, Pedro needed assistance with understanding and complying with BTRC requirements. The BSC Specialist explained the steps to apply for and maintain the BTRC, including display requirements, tax obligations, and renewal processes. The application for the BTRC was completed, and Pedro received a temporary BTRC with an official business start date of August 1, 2024.

He gained valuable knowledge about business compliance and technical assistance, positioning his business for a successful launch.
